Build a life
that moves.

ORIENT is coaching for people who want to feel capable in their bodies again — to move through their days with more strength, range and ease, and to make movement part of who they are, not one more thing on the list.

Why it’s called ORIENT

orient

To orient is to find which way you’re facing.

First, it’s a bearing — knowing where you stand and where you want to be. Then it’s something you feel: reading the body so clearly you sense the signal before you open the app.

The terrain

There was a time you didn’t think about it.

You moved because life asked you to — you carried, climbed, ran, played, kept going. Movement wasn’t a task. It was how you lived in your body.

Then came the years of desks and screens and being busy, and somewhere in them the body went quiet. Movement turned into something you schedule and skip — one more thing you keep meaning to restart. Or the opposite: you kept pushing through a body that was quietly asking you to stop, and paid for it.

Neither is a failure of willpower. It’s what happens when the body stops being part of the conversation. ORIENT is how you start asking again.

The daily practice

It starts with one honest question.

Every morning, ORIENT asks how the body actually is — not how the plan says it should be. Green, Amber or Red. The answer shapes the day.

  1. Morning

    Read where the body is.

Green, Amber, or Red — an honest read of how much the body can absorb today.

  2. First window

    Get the body moving.

A first window sized to the signal — walk, run, ride, gym, mobility and more.

  3. Through the day

Let the response shape the day.

If the body came back with more, a second window opens. If not, hold the day where it landed — nothing borrowed from tomorrow.

  4. Evening

    Close the day honestly.

Settled, held steady, or still carrying charge — each read sharpens the next.

What ORIENT is

Two things, working together.

01 — The practice

A daily practice that pays attention to you.

Each morning, ORIENT notices something true about how you’ve been moving through your life and gives you the right thing to do that day — sized to the body you actually woke up in, not the one you meant to have.

  • A clear Green / Amber / Red call every morning
  • The day’s movement, sized to what you’ve got
  • An honest close that sharpens your own read
  • Weekly and monthly notes in a voice that knows where you’ve been
  • No streaks, no leaderboards — nothing to keep alive but the rhythm
Part of every coaching place
02 — The coach

A coach who’s actually there.

Behind the practice is a real person. I read your week. I call. I nudge when you drift, and I adjust the plan as you change. You’re not subscribing to an app — you’re being coached.

  • The movement anchors that fit your real life
  • Strength and endurance built without losing rhythm
  • Returning capacity turned into a life you actually want

The route

Four phases, in order.

Coaching isn’t a pile of workouts. It’s a path with a shape. This is the ground we cover together, roughly in this order.

Structure

We build a container for your days — something steady to return to, so movement has somewhere to live.

Rhythm

It stops being a decision you have to make and becomes rhythm — just part of how your weeks go.

Capacity

Your body opens up. Strength, range, ease — the freedom to do more of what you actually want to do.

Direction

Movement stops being the point and starts pointing somewhere — toward the life you want to be living.

You don’t chase direction. You build the rhythm that reveals it.

Who’s behind it

Matt Nicholls · Wānaka
Out there, it wasn’t fitness I noticed. It was orientation.

I walked Te Araroa — around 3,000 kilometres on foot, the length of New Zealand. Months of doing almost nothing but moving. What I found on that trail wasn’t a fitness thing. It was orientation: when my body was in motion every day, everything else — how I felt, what mattered, where I was going — came into focus.

I built ORIENT so people could have some of that without walking off into the mountains for four months to find it. I’m a personal trainer by trade, and I coach a small number of people at a time — online, wherever you are, and in person here in Wānaka, in the gym and out on the trails.

Is this you?

A small practice, on purpose.

Maybe there’s a marathon you keep circling. A trail you want to walk, a version of yourself you’d like to meet in the gym. The goal is rarely the point, though — underneath it is a feeling you’re after. Capable. Steady. Free. Clear. And that feeling isn’t locked inside one race; it carries into the hike, the water, the ordinary Tuesday.

So the first question here isn’t what you’re training for. It’s what movement gives you — different for everyone, and hardly anyone has ever been asked. That’s where we start: working out what each kind of movement actually does for you, and letting a direction surface from that. One that’s yours.

Run the marathon.
Walk the trail.
Get back in the water.

But build the person who can do those things first.

Find your feet

Ready to start moving?

Tell me where you are and where you’d like to get to. If it’s a fit, we’ll find you a place.

01 — A conversation

A real hour on where you’ve been and what you’re actually after.

02 — Your system, built

Signal baseline, movement menu, gym sessions written by hand.

03 — The first weeks

Calibration, not performance — we tune the read together.
